Cosmetic Enhancements: Hair Transplant Surgery

Male pattern baldness is a hereditary condition affecting 30% of males in their 30"sand 50% of males in their 50’s. This condition can be very frustrating for many men. There are some options available for treating this problem. The Kentucky Center for Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery offers the latest techniques available for hair transplant surgery.

The old plug method of transplants that was used many years ago was a very successful procedure, however, created a problem recreating an esthetic hairline. The plugs often have unnatural appearance often referred to as corn cob rows or barbie doll hair. With the new micro and mini grafts available today this problem has been resolved. We can now recreate the hairline very naturally and esthetically using very small single hair grafts. Somewhat larger grafts are then used to fill in the areas behind the hairline.

The grafts are obtained from strips of hair taken from the back of the head. The hair in this area is genetically different from the rest of the head and is not affected by male pattern baldness. The hair is then cut into very small grafts containing anywhere from 1-10 hairs. A small punch is used to remove tissue in the area that grafts are to be placed and the grafts are then transplanted to this area one at a time. The procedure takes about 3-4 hours and is usually done with local anesthetic. Depending on the area to be grafted it will normally take from 3-5 sessions to obtain a desirable result. The hair will usually start growing in about 4-6 weeks and will have an optimum result in about 4-6 months.
