Sinus Lift

A sinus lift, also known as a sinus augmentation, is a surgical procedure in dentistry that aims to increase the amount of bone in the upper jaw, specifically in the area of the molars and premolars, by elevating the sinus membrane and placing a bone graft into the space created. This procedure is typically necessary when there is insufficient bone height in the upper jaw, or the sinuses are too close to the jaw for dental implants to be placed securely.

The bone graft can be made from the patient’s bone, a donor, or synthetic materials. Over several months, it is integrated with the existing bone, creating a solid foundation for dental implants.

A sinus lift is a critical procedure for patients who have lost bone due to periodontal disease, tooth loss, or other factors. They seek dental implants to restore their oral function and aesthetics.

When Is a Sinus Lift Necessary?

Bone Loss Due to Tooth Loss

When a tooth is lost, the bone that previously supported the tooth begins to resorb or deteriorate over time. This natural process, known as bone resorption, reduces the bone available for dental implants. As the bone shrinks, it can leave insufficient space for implant placement, making a sinus lift essential to restore adequate bone height.

Periodontal Disease

Chronic periodontal (gum) disease can lead to significant bone loss around the teeth. As the disease progresses, it can erode the jawbone, reducing bone volume and height. For patients with advanced periodontal disease, a sinus lift may be required to build up the bone and provide a stable foundation for dental implants.

Anatomical Variations

Some individuals naturally have larger sinus cavities or a thinner upper jawbone. These anatomical variations can limit the amount of bone available for implant placement. A sinus lift helps address these challenges by creating additional space in the upper jaw, allowing for the placement of dental implants.

Insufficient Bone Density

In some cases, even if there is enough bone height, the density of the bone may be insufficient to support dental implants securely. A sinus lift procedure can improve bone density by introducing graft materials that integrate with the existing bone, enhancing the overall quality and strength of the jawbone.

Preservation of Facial Structure

Bone loss in the upper jaw can lead to changes in the facial structure, such as sunken cheeks or a weakened jawline. By performing a sinus lift and placing dental implants, patients can restore their oral function and maintain or improve their facial aesthetics and structural integrity.

The Sinus Lift Procedure

A sinus lift, or sinus augmentation, is a specialized surgical procedure designed to increase the amount of bone in the upper jaw, specifically in the area of the molars and premolars. This procedure is essential for patients with insufficient bone height to support dental implants.

Before undergoing a sinus lift, patients will have a thorough consultation with their oral surgeon or periodontist. During this appointment, the oral facial surgeon will review the patient’s medical history, perform a comprehensive oral examination, and take detailed X-rays or 3D imaging of the upper jaw and sinuses. This imaging is crucial for assessing the available bone, the size and shape of the sinus cavities, and planning the surgical approach. The results help the oral facial surgeon determine the most appropriate technique and materials for the bone graft.

On the day of the procedure, local anesthesia will be administered to numb the treatment area and ensure comfort during the surgery. Depending on the patient’s needs and preferences, sedation options may help them relax and remain calm throughout the procedure. Once the anesthesia has taken effect, our oral surgeon will make a small incision in the gum tissue to access the underlying bone.

With the gum tissue exposed, the surgeon creates a small window in the bone to access the sinus cavity. The sinus membrane, which lines the sinus cavity, is then carefully lifted away from the jawbone. This step is critical as it creates a space where the bone graft material will be placed. The surgeon must handle the sinus membrane gently to avoid any tears or complications.

Once the sinus membrane is lifted, the bone graft material is inserted into the space between the lifted membrane and the existing bone. The graft material may be autogenous (from the patient’s body), allogeneic (from a donor), or synthetic. The type of material used will depend on various factors, including the patient’s specific needs and preferences. In any case, the graft material serves as a scaffold for new bone growth and will eventually integrate with the existing bone over time.

After placing the bone graft, the oral surgeon carefully closes the incision in the gum tissue with sutures. These sutures help secure the graft material in place and facilitate proper healing. The surgeon may also provide the patient with postoperative instructions, including guidelines for managing swelling, discomfort, and oral hygiene.

Recovery after a sinus lift involves managing postsurgical discomfort, including swelling and mild pain. Patients may be prescribed pain medication and antibiotics to aid recovery and prevent infection. Carefully following the oral facial surgeon’s instructions ensures proper healing and avoids complications. The bone graft will gradually be integrated with the existing bone over several months, during which time the patient will have follow-up appointments to monitor progress.

The patient will be ready for dental implants once the bone graft has been fully integrated, and the surrounding bone healed. This typically occurs several months after the sinus lift procedure. During this phase, our oral facial surgeon in Richmond, KY, will place the dental implants into the newly formed bone, allowing them to be fused with the bone in an osseointegration process. This provides a stable foundation for the replacement teeth. Contact us today to learn more.

Benefits of a Sinus Lift

  • A sinus lift increases the bone in the upper jaw, providing the necessary support for dental implants and significantly improving the chances of successful implant placement and long-term stability.
  • With a stable foundation for dental implants, patients can enjoy restored oral function, allowing them to eat, speak, and smile confidently.
  • Dental implants supported by a sinus lift can provide a natural-looking and aesthetically pleasing result, enhancing the patient’s overall appearance and self-esteem.
  • A sinus lift in Lexington, KY, can help prevent further bone loss in the upper jaw by placing a bone graft and promoting bone growth, maintaining the integrity of the facial structure.
